- In 15th century, Mali was weakened so Songhai was able to expand its territory. Songhai was located in West Africa.
- The two capitals were Kukiy & Gao.
- Songhai people settled long along the middle region of the Niger River. They used river for transport, fishing, hunting, and agriculture.

- Located in West Africa, South of the Sahara.
- Ancient Ghana encompassed what is now modern Northern Senegal and Southern Mauritania.
- It lies about four hundred miles north west of modern Ghana.
- The Soninke people, came together under a leader with semi-divine status, called Dinga Cisse to create Ghana.
